FATHER MICHAEL J. McGIVNEY FOUNDER'S DAY
FOUNDERS
DAY MARCH 29, 2008- Founders Day, in honor
of Fr. Michael J. McGivney, was Saturday, March 29.
As you all heard the Good News from the Vatican, Pope
Benedict XVI approved a degree recognizing the
heroic virtue of our Founder. If this isnt a
great incentive for all of us Brother Knights, our
families and our Catholic friends, to continue supporting
and promoting the Fr. McGivney Guild well, I truly
dont know what is!!!!
I noticed thru e-mails and Council bulletins many
Councils were planning a 1st Degree on Founders
Day. Probably, some of the Councils and their
members were also planning a Vigil Prayer Service or
mass. I attended such an event. It was the
Annual Fr. McGivney Rosary, Prayer and Vigil Service at
St. James Catholic Church sponsored by Holy Apostles
Council #12543, Las Vegas. Officiating was Fr.
Jovito Cordero, (a 3rd Degree member), retired from the
Philippines. He volunteers at Our Lady of Las Vegas
and St. Bridgette's, Las Vegas. He was very inspiring and
spoke very highly about our Founders background.
I want to thank Grand Knight Bernie King, District Deputy
No. 5, Ray Gardea, Mike Rippa, and their Council members
and ladies, for continuing to sponsor this Founders
Day annual event. I look forward to the next
Founders Day Vigil in Nevada. Directly after
this service, the members left to volunteer at Catholic
Charities to help feed the needy.
Irene and I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming
May convention in Ely.

Memo: State Free Throw Championship winners
announced
The annual Free Throw Championship continues to be the
biggest event hosted each year by the Knights of Columbus
in Nevada for children. An estimated 370 kids
participated statewide this winter and one child,
13-year-old JP Cadena from St. Viators in Las Vegas, will
have his name permanently in the record books.
Cadena calmly sank all 25 of his attempts during the
Southern Nevada Regional to win his third straight Free
Throw Championship crown. His score will be forwarded to
Supreme where he will certainly be honored. Cadena
represents council 8282.
Thanks to John Harris, Tony Stevenson and their crew in
the Reno area for coordinating the Northern Nevada
regional in Sparks. Because of their efforts, district
winners were able to compete for a Northern title - those
scores were compared with results from the Southern
Regional for the state crown. In years past, children up
North only competed in council and district competitions
with district scores counting for state.
Also, thanks to the brothers in Las Vegas for their help.
We had nearly a dozen brothers in attendance for the
Southern Regional, including regulars like David Briggs,
Teddie Aceto and Sam Rubulo.
An awards ceremony is scheduled for the annual state
convention in Ely during the first weekend of May. Since
no winners are from the Ely-area, trophies will be given
to Grand Knights or District Deputies from the respective
councils for distribution at a council meeting or mass.

The Sacrament of Confession
The Sacrament of
Confession
Common
Misunderstandings: Confession is one
the least understood sacraments in the Catholic
Church. In reconciling us to God,it is a great source of
grace, and Catholics are encouraged to take advantage of
it often.
What
is Confession?
What is its purpose and its
effects?
What are its requirements?
Can we confess our sins directly to God, or must we
go through a priest?
Confession
as a Sacrament: The Sacrament of Penance,
commonly called Confession,is one of the seven sacraments
recognized by the Catholic Church. Catholics believe that
all of the sacraments were instituted by Jesus Christ
himself. In this case, of Confession, that institution
occurred on Easter Sunday, when Christ first appeared to
the apostles after his Resurrection. Breathing on them,
he said "Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose
sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those
whose sins you retain, they are
retained" (John 20:22-23).
The Marks of the Sacrament:
Catholics also believe that the Sacraments are an
outward sign of an inward grace. In this case, the out
ward sign is the absolution, or
the forgiveness of sins, that the priest grants to
the penitent (the person confessing his sins); the
inward grace is the reconciliation of the
penitent to God (which is why the sacrament is also
called the Sacrament of Reconciliation).
The Purpose of Confession:
The reconciling of man to God is the purpose of
Confession. When we sin, we deprive ourselves of God's
grace. And by doing so, we make it more easier to sin
some more. The only way out of this downward cycle is to
repent of them, and to ask Gods forgiveness. Then, in the
Sacrament of Confession, grace can be restored to our
souls, and we can once again resist sin.
What is required? Three things
are required of a penitent order to receive the Sacrament
worthy lily:
1.
He must be contrite--or,in other words, sorry for his
sins.
2. He must confess those sins fully,in kind and in
number.
3. He must be willing to do penance and make amends
for his sins.
How
Often should you go to Confession? While
Catholics are only required to go to Confession when they
are aware that they have committed a mortal sin, the
Church urges the faithful to take advantage of the
sacrament often. A good rule of thumb is to go once per
month. (The Church strongly recommends that,in
preperation for fulfilling our Easter Duty to receive
communion, we go to Confession even if we are aware only
of venial sin.)
The Church especially urges the faithful to receive the
Sacrament of Confession frequently during Lent to help
them in their spiritual preparation for Easter.
Why is Confession Necessary?
Non-Catholics, and even many Catholics, often ask whether
they can confess their sins directly to God, and whether
God can forgive them without going through a priest. On
the most basic level, of course the answer is yes, and
Catholics should make frequent acts of contrition, which
are prayers in which we tell God that we are sorry for
our sins and ask for his forgiveness.
But the question misses the point of the Sacrament of
Confession. The sacrament, by its very nature,
confers graces that help us to live a Christian life,
which is why the Church requires us to receive it at
least once per year.
Moreover, it was instituted by Christ as the proper form
for the forgiveness of our sins. Therefore, we should not
only be willing to receive the sacrament, but we should
also embrace it as a gift from a loving God.
Yours in Christ,
Ray Foster
State Church Director

Thank you Knights of Columbus
To our wonderful Knights of
Columbus,
This letter is a little late in coming, but I figured if
I got it out before Lent it would be alright.
Let me begin by saying that I am so thankful and grateful
that the Knights of Columbus are back in full-swing at
Guardian Angel Cathedral serving our Bishop. The grace
and majesty you bring to Cathedral liturgy is
outstanding. Your presence brings the true spirit
of our Catholic faith to the people of God.
I am proud to have you as a sponsor for our Christmas
Midnight Mass LIVE Telecast as well. The money
received from the sale of the Christmas ornaments was
able to bring us to a higher quality of production for
the television viewing audience. Your additional
donation to cover costs on All Talk Radio provided the
opportunity to spread the Good News of our
Lord Jesus Christ to 174 countries around the world.
I look forward to continued participation from our
Knights of Columbus. It is an honor and pleasure to
serve with such noble gentlemen.

SUBJECT: FR. McGIVNEY GUILD
Worthy
State Deputy, State Officers, District Deputies,
Insurance Agents, Grand Knights, Past State Deputies,
Administrative Assistant and my Brother Knights:
In as much as I have been a bit under the weather the
last few months, I was unable to attend or report the
following Guild Membership figures at the December 2007
mid-year meeting. However, thanks to Fr.
McGivneys intercession and prayers from my family
and friends, I am almost feeling 100% better, but am
still under doctors care. I hope to soon
again be extremely active regarding the Guild and Fr.
McGivneys canonization to sainthood.
UPDATE ON GUILD: As of October 1,
2007 International Guild membership was 122,000. As of
October 1, 2007, Nevadas Guild Membership was 738.
As of January 1, 2008 International Guild membership is
currently well over 123,000. As of January 1, 2008, there
are 740 Guild members in the Nevada jurisdiction.
As you can see there was only an addition of TWO
members. My Brother Knights: we have a lot of work
to do. I would like to see all of us work together
to really start recruiting our own non-Guild members
especially family members and non-Knights in
particular. We are four months away from our Annual
Meeting in Ely. I would like to proudly report an
increase in Guild membership at that Annual meeting and
to Supreme, but I cant do this without your help.
GRAND KNIGHTS: Here is what I am suggesting;
Recruit your own Council members first. They, in
turn, when sponsoring a new member into the Knights of
Columbus, can have the new member complete a Fr.
McGiveney Guild membership application. Members of
the Guild will receive a newsletter and periodic updates
on the progress of the cause for canonization. This
is a great opportunity to learn about the Founder of our
organization, Fr. Michael J. McGivney.
If you have any questions regarding the Fr. McGivney
Guild, please feel free to contact me at 702-870-8031 or

Ash Wednesday in the Catholic Church
The
First Day of Lent: In the Roman Catholic
Church, Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of Lent, the
season of preparation for the resurrection of our Lord
Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. (In Eastern Rite Catholic
churches it begins two days earlier, on Clean Monday.)
While Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of
Obligation, all Roman Catholics are encouraged to attend
Mass on this day in order to mark the beginning of the
Lenten Season.
The Distribution of Ashes: During
Mass, the ashes which give Ash Wednesday its name are
distributed. The ashes are made by the Blessed palms that
were distributed the previous year on Palm Sunday; many
Churches ask their parishioners to return any palms
they took home so they can be burned.
After the Priest blesses the ashes and sprinkles them
with holy water, the faithful come forward to receive
them. The Priest dips his right thumb in the ashes and,
making the Sign of the Cross on each persons forehead,
say's; "Remember, Man, that thou art dust, and
to dust thou shalt return." (or a variation on those
words).
A Day of Repentance: The
distribution of ashes reminds us of our own mortality and
calls us to repentance. In the early Church, Ash
Wednesday was the day on which those who had sinned, and
wished to be readmitted to the Church, would begin their
public penance. The ashes that we receive, remind us of
our own sinfulness, and many Catholic's leave them on
there foreheads all day as a sign of humility.
Fasting and Abstinence are required:
The Church emphasizes the penitential nature of
Ash Wednesday by calling us to fast and abstain from
meat. Catholics who are over the age of 18 and under the
age of 60 are required to fast, which means they eat only
one complete meal and two smaller ones during the day,
with no food in between. Catholics who are over the age
of 14, are required to refrain from eating any meat, or
any food made with meat, on Ash Wednesday.
Taking Stock of Our Spiritual Life:
The fasting and abstinence is not a simple form of
penance, however, It is also a call for us to take
stock of our spiritual lives. As Lent begins, we
should set out specific spiritual goals we would like to
reach before Easter and decide how will we pursue
them---for instance, by going daily to mass when we can
and receiving the Sacrament of Confession more often.
Ash Wednesday is February 6th 2008, please check your
missalettes for mass and confession times.
Thank you and God Bless.

UPDATE: Irrigation Canal Levee Breech - Fernley,
Nevada
Nevada State Council; Had a couple of Brothers contact me,
regarding helping with the flood mess in Fernley. I said
I would try to keep them advised on status and needs.
Just got of the phone with FS 13897,
Brother Bill Bushard and DD #10, Brother Bob Wallace
(Sunday, 1/6 - 1:00 PM.) There are no immediate
needs known, and that Father Bob Chorey of St Roberts was
going to contact them if there was. I have also
left a message with the Parish.
The big thing now is clean-up. Flood water have
gone down, but water was mixed with sewage and clean,
could be very unhealthy if not done right. Money
donations to Red Cross is probably the best way to help
at this time.
I'll keep you posted, if anything else
comes up.

Saturday morning (Jan 5), around 4:30 AM, the

After talking with the Financial Secretary, a couple of
Knights, and the Parish office on Saturday morning, two
Brother's Families were close, but no water damage
(including the brother of Father Mark Hanifan). Status of
other Catholic Families at St Roberts is unknown at this
time.

In our thoughts and prayers
Fellow
Knights and Ladies, As we are all enjoying the
Christmas spirit with our families and friends as well as
fellow Brothers, I would ask that we please keep in our
thoughts and prayers the servicemen and women as well as
their families.
It is a Christmas with little joy for them as their
wives, husbands and children, Mom and Dads are
faced with worry and uncertainty this holiday season.
I would ask that we also keep in our thoughts and
prayers our Police, Firefighters, Paramedics and ER crews
as their load always increases on the holidays. If you
happen to see one , tell him or her that you appreciate
what they all do for us.
Please also remember the less fortunate, the homeless,
those who probe won't receive gifts or cheer, those who
will be lucky to get in one of the shelters in town or
get a hot meal. The sick the elderly, the kids who
don't have a Mom or Dad. Remember, Charity!!
This Saturday Dec. 8th is also the day we celebrate the
Immaculate Conception of the Holy Mary. This a Holy Day
of Obligation in observance of the Advent Season.
Most importantly; Lets also keep our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ in Christmas...

State Soccer Champions Announced ...more than 100
children participate!
St.
Elizabeth Ann Seton student Tony Pitaro is more than a
state champion - he's a state record holder.
Pitaro, 11, posted the best score in Knights of Columbus
soccer challenge history for a male competitor on Oct. 20
at the state event. Representing Mother Seton
Council No. 11029, Pitaro scored on 19 of his 25 kicks
for a record 185 points and the state title. He is
one of nine state champions in the event's third
year. Several councils statewide have sponsored the
event the past two years, but this fall marked the first
time it was competed at the state level.
Six of the nine champions are from council No. 1340 in
the Ely area. The group is highlighted by McKenna
Windows, the champion in the 10-year-old division, who
posted 200 points in the district event - the best score
in state history for a girl.
Rosary council No. 3741 of Henderson had two champions,
Francheska Lozano and Brandy Huff, and continues to be
the model council for this event. Annually, they
have 50 to 60 children participating.
Special thanks to Harry Rhea, Past Grand Knight of Sacred
Heart Council in Ely, and his crew for making this a true
state event. The brothers in Northern Nevada had 28
participants and conducted council, regional and state
competitions. Also, thanks to Grand Knight Tom Habermas
of Mother Seton Council and District Deputy No. 7 Dave
Briggs for their help during the state event in Southern
Nevada.
The challenge featured 120 participants, ages 10 to 14,
throughout the state. That's an amazing showing
considering the event is still in its infancy. I
anticipate more children competing in upcoming years,
especially with brothers like Habermas and Rhea leading
the way.
A list of champions is below. Trophies will be
presented to Grand Knights at the mid-year meeting in
Reno.
Boys
10 - Cole James Evers, Ely, 135 points
11 - Tony Pitaro, Las Vegas, 185 points --- STATE RECORD
12 - Edward Pyeatt, Ely, 70 points
13 - Tyler Brunson, McGill, 145 points
14 - no participants
Girls
10 - McKenna Windows, Ely, 130 points
11 - Kamber Carson, McGill, and Kristina Crowther, Ely,
165 points - Co-champions
12 - Francheska Lozano, Las Vegas, 125 points
13 - Brandy Huff, Henderson, 175 points
14 - no participants

Supreme News Release: Knights of Columbus
insurance in force tops $65 billion
(NEW
HAVEN, CT) - The Knights of Columbus insurance
program passed a major milestone today, when total
insurance in force exceeded $65 billion for the first
time. The Order was established in 1882 as a
fraternal benefit society, and one of its primary aims
was to enable its members to protect their families with
life insurance. The amount of Knights of Columbus
life insurance in force has doubled in the past decade,
from $32.9 billion in 1997 to $65 billion today.
The Knights of Columbus now has over $14 billion in
assets and more than 1.8 million life, annuity and
long-term care policies in force, and ranks in the
Fortune 1000 list of America's largest companies.
It is one of only six insurance companies in North
America to receive the highest possible rating from both
Standard & Poor's (AAA) and A.M. Best (A++), and
certification of ethical business practices from the
Insurance Marketplace Standards Association (IMSA).
Supreme Knight and CEO Carl A. Anderson said that
surpassing the $65 billion milestone "is solid
evidence of our faithfulness to the vision of our
founder, Fr. Michael J. McGivney, and a real tribute to
our force of more than 1,300 field agents who have
dedicated their careers to helping our members build a
rock solid foundation on which to provide financial
protection to their families."
The Knights of Columbus has more than 1.7 million members
worldwide, in more than 13,000 local and state councils
and fourth degree assemblies. Last year, members
donated more than 68 million hours of volunteer time and
$143 million to charitable causes.

Supreme News Release: Supreme
Knight comments on UK hybrid embryos
Barbaric
Britain
New Haven, CT - September 7, 2007-
"The decision by Great Britain's Human Fertilisation
and Embryology Authority to permit the cloning of hybrid
embryos - part human and part animal - represents a
staggering descent toward high-tech barbarism,"
Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said today.
"It is a shocking assault on the fundamental dignity
of the human person, and the utilitarian excuse given for
the decision is emblematic of the utterly amoral
'standards' that some in the scientific community are all
too willing to apply in the field of stem cell
research," Anderson continued. "It is nonsense
to claim that, having crossed the momentous threshold of
creating human/animal hybrids, it will be somehow
possible to control it with 'caution and careful
scrutiny.' Worst of all, the decision is driven by a
grudging recognition that the appetite of some stem cell
researchers for human embryos far exceeds the number that
they can obtain from fertility clinics. And so British
researchers will now be permitted to compound one horror
- experimentation on live embryonic human beings - with
another: the creation of human/animal hybrids."
The Knights of Columbus, with more than 1.7 million
members worldwide, is among the most active pro-life
groups in the U.S., Canada and other countries, and
provides substantial support for the National Catholic
Bioethics Center as well as for a wide variety of
pro-life groups and projects.

Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer of Peace
Sept. 11th
Worthy
Knights and Ladies, During his recent visit to
Assisito celebrate the 800th anniversary of St. Francis'
conversion, Pope Benedict XVI called for all people
to become "instruments of peace through thousands of
small gestures in their daily lives. "The annual
Knights of Columbus World Day of Prayer for Peace, to be
held this coming September the 11th, fulfills this
request by forming "small gestures" of Knights
throughout the Order into a powerful offering of prayer
for peace.
This September the 11th marks the sixth anniversary of
the terrorist attacks on the United States. As we recall
the tragic events of six years ago, and honor the
thousands who lost their lives, we also pray for peace
among nations, especially in those places where war or
turmoil persist. We pray that religion will be a means of
peace and accord and not an excuse for violence and
division.
Thus all Grand Knights as well as Faithful Navigators are
urged to plan ahead for this event and hold an
appropriate private prayer service in your church ,
Council or Assembly meetings, or a war memorial, or
a park where there is a US flag.
Supreme Council also offers a day of prayer poster (
#9483) and prayer cards (#9484). to order materials , you
can download the form on the Supreme Council Web
site < www.kofc.org > under
the "for members" link.

the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public
Service. Harry McKillop spent many years
locating and bringing home American POWs during and after
the Vietnam War. After the fall of Saigon, he
organized the rescue of 170 Nung Vietnamese who had
escaped to China's High Island. Even today,
McKillop continues to pursue additional leads of POWs,
