State soccer challenge winners

To: State Deputy James Kelly, Worthy State Officers and Brother Knights
From: Raymond Brewer, State Youth Director
Re: State soccer challenge results

We had an increase in participation again this fall for the state Soccer Challenge, which is a true testament to the brother knights we have in our state and their dedication to the children of their parish.

Our numbers, however, could have been better. We still had a high percentage of councils who failed to recognize this event.

Here is a list of the winners. Medals will be ordered and delivered to Grand Knights for presentation during mass or CCD.

I would like to personally that Dave Ryan in the Las Vegas area for his efforts in this project. Dave did everything from booking a facility, setting up the nets and cooking hot dogs for participants. Dave is our State Advocate and it is refreshing to see a state officer show this much interest in youth activities.

Also, thanks to Harry Rhea and the brothers in Ely. Year in and year out, these brothers have the highest numbers of participants.

Please keep our children in your prayers. They are our future Knights.

MEMO: STATE WIDE NOTICE : STATE OFFICE CHANGES AS OF 1 Oct. 2009

My Brother Knights,

It is with deep regret that I have accepted the resignation of the Worthy State Secretary John O’Rourke. Brother John has served the order in many positions over the years. He is a faithful member of the Fourth Degree. Brother John has been the state warden, state advocate, state treasure and has been the secretary for the past three years. In addition John is an active participant in degree ceremonials and his home council, 11029. He notified me on Saturday, September 12th that due to “extenuating circumstances, my priorities have and need to change… I cannot in good conscience devote the necessary time to the State Secretary’s position”.

Brother John is a class act, he has taken it upon himself saying, “It would be unfair to you and to the other state officers for me to continue.” John has always placed the order above self and he will be deeply missed as our State Secretary.

In order to insure continuity of the state council I have offered the position to each of the state council members by sonority of position, neither the state treasure or state advocate could accept the position at this time for numerous reason. Our Worthy State Warden has accepted and will be as of October 1, 2009 the State Secretary.

In order to fill the position of State Warden I have contacted the District Deputies in order of service. Worthy District Deputy of District 10, Brother David Briggs has agreed to accept the position and will be the state warden effective October 1, 2009. He will continue to be DD for District 10 for the remainder of the fraternal year.

I extend all of my and the other state officers best wishes to Brother John in both his personal and order future. I extend a hardy welcome to Brothers Pat and David as they embark on their new duties.

In Christ,

James “Jim” Kelly
State Deputy

ACTION ALERT - Health Care Reform Bill
From the 127th Supreme Convention

Contact Congress - Health Care Reform
will Subsidize Abortion

The U.S. House and Senate are expected to vote after Labor Day on health care reform legislation that could result in the largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade.

In July, committees in both the House and the Senate approved bills that would result in the federal funding of abortion on a massive scale. The committees rejected amendments that would have prevented federal funding of abortion.

The House and Senate will be on recess during the month of August, and Senators and Congressmen will be in their home districts taking the public's pulse on health care reform.

August could be the most important month in the history of the pro-life cause.

This August, every Knight of Columbus should urge his representatives in Congress to oppose any health care legislation unless specific amendments are added to prohibit abortion subsidies. Therefore, members of the House should be asked to support the Stupak Amendment. Members of the Senate should be asked to support the Hatch Amendment. All lawmakers should be asked to OPPOSE the health care legislation unless these amendments are added.

We urge you to:

  • Attend public events / town hall meetings to let your representatives in Congress know your opinion.

  • Call the local and Washington offices of your senators and congressman.

For contact information for your senators and congressman, go to the National Right to Life Committee website at http://www.nrlactioncenter.com

Web-Site to mark the Year for Priests Celebration

The US Bishops' Secretariat for Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations has set up a Web Site to mark the Year for Priests, to be celebrated June 19, 2009 to June 19, 2010 throughout the world. Pope Benedict XVI has designated the year long celebration to begin on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a day of prayer for the sanctification of all priests. The pope also has designated St. John Vianney as the Universal Patron of All Priests on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of the saint's death. The saint, who also is known as the Cure of Ars, is the patron of parish priests.

The Year for priests Website can be found at:
http://www.usccb.org/yearforpriests/index.shtml

Elements of the site include Pope Benedict's message for the occasion and the announcement the plenary indulgence in both English and Spanish in conjunction with the celebration. Additional elements include prayers that have been commissioned for both priests and laity. During the year, the Secretariat will provide monthly articles by prominent Catholic women who will write about their faith and trust in the priesthood.

Worthy Brothers,

It is official! Nevada won the $1,000 prize for membership recruitment during the months of March, April and May. I have attached the notification and results from the Supreme Website.

Thank each and everyone of you for all the hard work. We still have a way to go. As of today we still need 28 new members between now and June 30 to make the membership gross intake quota. Don't stop keep up your good work and help us get over the top!

Included in the presentation was a letter from President Bush, and a letter and pin from the Council on Service and Civic Participation. We join all these organizations in congratulating and thanking Frank for his many years of service.

VIVAT JESUS!

TEXT FROM PRESENTATION
Good morning.  My name is John Wainscott.  I am a member of the Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus and am honored to be here today to present an award to a very special man well known here at St. Peters.   Will Past State Deputy and Former Master Frank J. Becker and his daughter Rita please come forward.     In January 2002 President Bush called upon all Americans to provide service to others at home or abroad. In his speech founding the Points of Light Foundation, the first volunteer organization he mentioned was the Knights of Columbus.    President Bush was asking for more volunteers but was also bringing to light what many individuals have done through their lives to assist others in need in many countless ways.   President Bush stated that Americans continue to serve and are a part of the building of momentum of millions of acts of kindness and decency that are changing America, one heart and one soul at a time.   Frank, your actions have contributed in a large way to making your Church and community better places while in Utah and in Nevada.  I could go on and on about the many instances of your commitment and generosity in assisting others in need.   So Frank – on behalf of The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, The Board of Directors of the Knights of Columbus, The Fourth Degree Assemblies in Utah, and your brother Knights here at St. Peters, I present to you the highest award you can receive from the Points of Light Foundation, the Lifetime Achievement award.

Frank (center) received the Award, a letter from the Council on Service and Civic Participation, a Letter from President Bush, and a recognition pin.

Pope on YouTube

Worthy Brothers, FYI

The Vatican is launching its own YouTube channel to engage more with the digital generation and better control Pope Benedict XVI's online image.

Officials from Vatican Television and Google announced the channel Friday.

Monsignor Claudio Maria Celli, who heads the Vatican's social communications office, said the pope explicitly approved of the channel. He said Benedict was "a man of dialogue" who wanted to engage with people wherever they are.

Celli said the Vatican is launching the channel in part to have some control over the pontiff's image, which he said is already being used on sites respectful of the papacy and not.

The Vatican plans to update the site daily, with its messages available in Italian, German, English and Spanish.

Happy New Year from Military Knights in Action. I hope all our readers had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to 2009.

As the new year begins, I have some exciting plans for the newsletter. Several articles have come to my attention that should carry us into the next few months. Starting with this month, we have a piece from Sam LaGrone at the Air Force Times.

I have also heard that a new round table has been launched in Afghanistan by a council in Canada. I'd love to hear more about their activities, so if any readers have information about this initiative, please send the material my way.

Bishop Calvo Position on FOCA & Reno "Health Care Discussion"

You may have heard about the “Health Care Community Discussion” to be held Monday, December 29th at 7:00 p.m. at the Grand Sierra Resort. Bishop Calvo, after extensive and careful consideration of many factors, has advised that he will not be attending the event, nor will the diocese be participating.

The Bishop believes “there is an urgent need for all Americans to have access to quality and affordable health care”, and finds it commendable that the Obama transition team is seeking input from people around the nation on this issue. However, he was dismayed that FOCA should be a topic for the community discussions about health care.

Bishop Calvo is opposed to FOCA and has reiterated the opposition of the bishops of the United States to the provisions of FOCA. He will call on Catholics in our diocese to voice their opposition in a postcard campaign. The Bishop indicated that “what our nation needs now are ways to promote health and healing and not legislation enabling the destruction of human life.” He stated that “efforts to promote FOCA will undermine the incoming administration’s own expressed desire to unify our nation” and he hopes the “provisions of FOCA are not insidiously inserted into health care legislation under the perverse guise of an “Access to Health Care Act.”

If you attend the discussion, please do so as a PRIVATE citizen (rather than as a representative of the Diocese or Knights of Columbus).

Vocation Message

Knights for their well known charity are obligated by their faith and good works to support the calling of men and women who dedicate their lives to our CREATOR.

Prayers at every opportunity possible during each day of our lives, at circle, council, Assembly and State meetings are to be said to encourage them of their dedicated and sacrificing calling. And most specially the missionaries.

We can support them financially and $2.00 per year per brothers is not a burden. Council treasurer may accumulate the fund with reporting to me for statistical purposes with eventual contribution to the Refund Support Vocation Program. (RSVP) by each council. Each council may give it to their favorite seminarians or as per Diocesan Vocation Directors. A refund of $100 to council and plaque from Supreme for every $500.00 donation is expected.

A Blessed Advent, a Holy Christmas and a Happy, Prosperous New Year to All.

Letter from Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson on FOCA

Dear Brother Knight:

It is probably fair to say that no other single activity has defined the Knights of Columbus over the past half century as much as the pro-life movement.

Following the shock of the Supreme Court's decision to preempt all state and federal laws regulating abortion in Roe v. Wade in 1973, we launched a long-term battle to fight legalized abortion. While achieving the ultimate goal of overturning Roe remains somewhere in the future, we have been able to achieve many small successes along the way:

· the Hyde Amendment, which restricts federal funding for abortions;
· the federal law banning partial birth abortions, which was finally upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in April 2007;
· the "Mexico City Policy," which has barred the use of federal taxpayers' money to pay for abortions in other countries;
· laws in 44 states that preserve a parental role when children under 18 seek abortions;
· laws in 40 states that restrict late-term abortions;
· laws in 46 states that protect the right of conscience for individual health care providers;
· laws in 27 states that protect the right of conscience for institutions;
· laws in 38 states that ban partial birth abortions;
· laws in 33 states that require counseling before having an abortion;
· and laws in 16 states that provide for ultrasounds before an abortion.

All of these restrictions on abortion - all of the progress we've made over the past 35 years in trying to limit and reduce abortions in the United States - would be invalidated with the stroke of a pen if the next Congress passes, and the next president signs, the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" (FOCA).

Before you cast your vote on Tuesday, please take the time and effort necessary to learn whether candidates for whom you might vote favor or oppose FOCA.

The House sponsors of FOCA are listed here;
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:HR01964:@@@P

The Senate sponsors of FOCA are listed here;
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:SN01173:@@@P

Obviously, if a candidate in your area is not listed among the sponsors, you may have to ask his or her campaign for their position on FOCA.

We have gathered much additional information about the Freedom of Choice Act, including links to material from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and on life issues generally on a special Knights of Columbus web page:
http://www.kofc.org/un/eb/en/about/activities/culture/index.html

Remember, all that we've done together since Roe to save the lives of the unborn is at stake.

PSA: Pastoral Letter from the Diocese of Reno Respect Life Moderato

Dear Parish Respect Life Members,

PLEASE bring the Pastoral Letter from the Diocese of Reno Respect Life Moderator Priest, Father Mark Hanifan, to your pastor and sit down with him to discuss how he wants to get this message out to the faithful. The "Freedom of Choice Act" that is being drafted in the US Congress is one of the most blatantly anti-life initiatives that has ever entered our political arena.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued an analysis of the potential impact of FOCA.
It would devastate our efforts to protect the pre-born.

Please give this matter serious and widespread attention in our parishes.

Mark Foxwell

Chairman, Diocese of Reno Respect Life Committee

New Spanish Council in Reno Diocese coming

Brothers:

    I am happy to report to you that all the necessary paper work has been submitted to the Supreme Council for the institution of a new Spanish Council at St. Therese - Church of the Little Flower in Reno.  This council came to be in approximately three weeks time from the first information meeting to now.  Yesterday at St Rose of Lima parish we held a 2nd and 3rd degree exemplification in which Bishop Calvo became a 3rd Degree member.  The Supreme Council supplied us with head-sets that allowed our Spanish members to fully participate in the degrees.  The consecutive translation was provided by our State Hispanic Development Director, Albert Nava.  By all reports this went very well with our Hispanic members.

    At last check we are just short of reaching our goal of achieving a 125% of goal in our recruitment for this year.  If any council has recently conducted a 1st degree and has NOT submitted their form 100s to Supreme I would ask you to please FAX and FedEx those tomorrow.  This will bump Nevada out of Division 6 and into Division 5 which will make our recruiting goals considerably easier next year.  We need about six more new members to achieve this goal.  Tomorrow is the deadline for this and that is the reason why I ask you to both FAX and FedEx.  Please do this if at all possible.

Vivat Jesus,

Rick Fambrini
State Membership Director

FATHER MICHAEL J. McGIVNEY FOUNDER'S DAY

FOUNDER’S DAY MARCH 29, 2008- Founder’s Day, in honor of Fr. Michael J. McGivney, was Saturday, March 29.  As you all heard the Good News from the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI  approved a degree recognizing the heroic virtue of our Founder.  If this isn’t a great incentive for all of us Brother Knights, our families and our Catholic friends, to continue supporting and promoting the Fr. McGivney Guild – well, I truly don’t know what is!!!!

I noticed thru e-mails and Council bulletins many Councils were planning a 1st Degree on Founder’s Day.  Probably, some of the Councils and their members were also planning a Vigil Prayer Service or mass.  I attended such an event.  It was the Annual Fr. McGivney Rosary, Prayer and Vigil Service at St. James Catholic Church sponsored by Holy Apostles Council #12543, Las Vegas.  Officiating was Fr. Jovito Cordero, (a 3rd Degree member), retired from the Philippines.  He volunteers at Our Lady of Las Vegas and St. Bridgette's, Las Vegas. He was very inspiring and spoke very highly about our Founder’s background.

I want to thank Grand Knight Bernie King, District Deputy No. 5, Ray Gardea, Mike Rippa, and their Council members and ladies, for continuing to sponsor this Founder’s Day annual event.  I look forward to the next  Founder’s Day Vigil in Nevada.  Directly after this service, the members left to volunteer at Catholic Charities to help feed the needy.

Irene and I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming May convention in Ely.

Memo: State Free Throw Championship winners announced

The annual Free Throw Championship continues to be the biggest event hosted each year by the Knights of Columbus in Nevada for children. An estimated 370 kids participated statewide this winter and one child, 13-year-old JP Cadena from St. Viators in Las Vegas, will have his name permanently in the record books.
Cadena calmly sank all 25 of his attempts during the Southern Nevada Regional to win his third straight Free Throw Championship crown. His score will be forwarded to Supreme where he will certainly be honored. Cadena represents council 8282.

Thanks to John Harris, Tony Stevenson and their crew in the Reno area for coordinating the Northern Nevada regional in Sparks. Because of their efforts, district winners were able to compete for a Northern title - those scores were compared with results from the Southern Regional for the state crown. In years past, children up North only competed in council and district competitions with district scores counting for state.

Also, thanks to the brothers in Las Vegas for their help. We had nearly a dozen brothers in attendance for the Southern Regional, including regulars like David Briggs, Teddie Aceto and Sam Rubulo.

An awards ceremony is scheduled for the annual state convention in Ely during the first weekend of May. Since no winners are from the Ely-area, trophies will be given to Grand Knights or District Deputies from the respective councils for distribution at a council meeting or mass.

The Sacrament of Confession

The Sacrament of Confession

Common Misunderstandings: Confession is one the least understood sacraments in the Catholic Church. In reconciling us to God,it is a great source of grace, and Catholics are encouraged to take advantage of it often.

What is Confession?
What is its purpose  and  its effects?
What are its requirements?
Can we confess our sins directly to God, or must we go through a priest?

Confession as a Sacrament: The Sacrament of Penance, commonly called Confession,is one of the seven sacraments recognized by the Catholic Church. Catholics believe that all of the sacraments were instituted by Jesus Christ himself. In this case, of Confession, that institution occurred on Easter Sunday, when Christ first appeared to the apostles after his Resurrection. Breathing on them, he said "Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained" (John 20:22-23).

The Marks of the Sacrament: Catholics also believe that the Sacraments are an outward sign of an inward grace. In this case, the out ward sign is the absolution, or the forgiveness of sins, that the priest grants to the penitent (the person confessing his sins); the inward grace is the reconciliation of the penitent to God (which is why the sacrament is also called the Sacrament  of Reconciliation).

The  Purpose of Confession: The reconciling of man to God is the purpose of Confession. When we sin, we deprive ourselves of God's grace. And by doing so, we make it more easier to sin some more. The only way out of this downward cycle is to repent of them, and to ask Gods forgiveness. Then, in the Sacrament of Confession, grace can be restored to our souls, and we can once again resist sin.

What is required? Three things are required of a penitent order to receive the Sacrament worthy lily:

1. He must be contrite--or,in other words, sorry for his sins.
2. He must confess those sins fully,in kind and in number.
3. He must be willing to do penance and make amends for his sins.

How Often should you go to Confession? While Catholics are only required to go to Confession when they are aware that they have committed a mortal sin, the Church urges the faithful to take advantage of the sacrament often. A good rule of thumb is to go once per month. (The Church strongly recommends that,in preperation for fulfilling our Easter Duty to receive communion, we go to Confession even if we are aware only of venial sin.)
The Church especially urges the faithful to receive the Sacrament of Confession frequently during Lent to help them in their spiritual preparation for Easter.

Why is Confession Necessary? Non-Catholics, and even many Catholics, often ask whether they can confess their sins directly to God, and whether God can forgive them without going through a priest. On the most basic level, of course the answer is yes, and Catholics should make frequent acts of contrition, which are prayers in which we tell God that we are sorry for our sins and ask for his forgiveness.
But the question misses the point of the Sacrament of Confession. The sacrament, by its very nature, confers graces that help us to live a Christian life, which is why the Church requires us to receive it at least once per year.
Moreover, it was instituted by Christ as the proper form for the forgiveness of our sins. Therefore, we should not only be willing to receive the sacrament, but we should also embrace it as a gift from a loving God.

Yours in Christ,
Ray Foster
State Church Director

Thank you Knights of Columbus

To our wonderful Knights of Columbus,

This letter is a little late in coming, but I figured if I got it out before Lent it would be alright.

Let me begin by saying that I am so thankful and grateful that the Knights of Columbus are back in full-swing at Guardian Angel Cathedral serving our Bishop. The grace and majesty you bring to Cathedral liturgy is outstanding.  Your presence brings the true spirit of our Catholic faith to the people of God.

I am proud to have you as a sponsor for our Christmas Midnight Mass LIVE Telecast as well.  The money received from the sale of the Christmas ornaments was able to bring us to a higher quality of production for the television viewing audience.  Your additional donation to cover costs on All Talk Radio provided the opportunity to spread the “Good News” of our Lord Jesus Christ to 174 countries around the world.

I look forward to continued participation from our Knights of Columbus.  It is an honor and pleasure to serve with such noble gentlemen.

With my sincere appreciation, love and blessings…

He shoots, he scores — and so does she in February with the Knights of Columbus.

The annual Free Throw Shoot, our orders’ biggest event for children each year in Nevada, will hold regional competitions in Southern Nevada on Feb. 23 & Northern Nevada on March 1.

The Las Vegas Valley regional is set for Saturday, Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 11 at St. Viators, located on Flamingo Road and Eastern Avenue.

Northern Nevada regional will be the following Saturday, March 1 from 1 p.m. to 3 at Alf Sorensen Recreation Center, located close to Reed High School in Sparks.

As decided during the mid-year meeting, results from the regional will be used to determine the state winners. Thanks to District Deputy No. 1 Jack Harris and District Deputy No. 4 Tony Stephenson for their contributions in doing the leg work in the Reno area. Their efforts will help more children get involved and appreciate what the Knights do for families.

Just to clarify, all council competitions SHOULD BE COMPLETE. District events must be hosted in February, or before the regional.

Knights of Columbus Participation in the 40 Days for Life Campaign

The January 2008 edition of the Columbian Magazine highlighted Knights support for the 40 Days for Life Campaign in an article on page 12 titled: "Life On The Line".  It shows how local councils are contributing to this dynamic and peaceful Pro Life program.

You can learn more about the multi national program, 40 Days for Life, by visiting http://www.40daysforlife.com/ . Nevada councils can get directly involved in the campaign which begins in Reno on February 6 by visiting http://www.40daysforlife.com/renotahoe . The coordinator in the Reno Tahoe area is: Carol Marie Siedenburg.  She can be contacted at: 530-583-2680 (h) or 530-412-1573 or by email at renotahoe@40daysforlife.com .

Councils in Southern Nevada can also get involved by contacting 40 Days for Life directly.  I'm sure Carol Marie would be glad to advise anyone in Southern Nevada about possibly getting a 40 Days for Life program set up for the Las Vegas area, or any other community in Nevada.

SUBJECT: FR. McGIVNEY GUILD

Worthy State Deputy, State Officers, District Deputies, Insurance Agents, Grand Knights, Past State Deputies, Administrative Assistant and my Brother Knights:

In as much as I have been a bit under the weather the last few months, I was unable to attend or report the following Guild Membership figures at the December 2007 mid-year meeting.  However, thanks to Fr. McGivney’s intercession and prayers from my family and friends, I am almost feeling 100% better, but am still under doctor’s care.  I hope to soon again be extremely active regarding the Guild and Fr. McGivney’s canonization to sainthood.

UPDATE ON GUILD: As of October 1, 2007 International Guild membership was 122,000. As of October 1, 2007, Nevada’s Guild Membership was 738.

As of January 1, 2008 International Guild membership is currently well over 123,000. As of January 1, 2008, there are 740 Guild members in the Nevada jurisdiction.

As you can see there was only an addition of TWO members.  My Brother Knights: we have a lot of work to do.  I would like to see all of us work together to really start recruiting our own non-Guild members – especially family members and non-Knights in particular.  We are four months away from our Annual Meeting in Ely.  I would like to proudly report an increase in Guild membership at that Annual meeting and to Supreme, but I can’t do this without your help.

GRAND KNIGHTS: Here is what I am suggesting;  Recruit your own Council members first.  They, in turn, when sponsoring a new member into the Knights of Columbus, can have the new member complete a Fr. McGiveney Guild membership application.  Members of the Guild will receive a newsletter and periodic updates on the progress of the cause for canonization.  This is a great opportunity to learn about the Founder of our organization, Fr. Michael J. McGivney.

If you have any questions regarding the Fr. McGivney Guild, please feel free to contact me at 702-870-8031 or e-mail me at CILV@cox.net

Ash Wednesday in the Catholic Church

The First Day of Lent: In the Roman Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday signifies the beginning of Lent,the season of preparation for the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. (In Eastern Rite Catholic churches it begins two days earlier, on Clean Monday.)   While Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, all Roman Catholics are encouraged to attend Mass on this day in order to mark the beginning of the Lenten Season.

The Distribution of Ashes: During Mass, the ashes which give Ash Wednesday its name are distributed. The ashes are made by the Blessed palms that were distributed the previous year on Palm Sunday; many Churches ask their parishioners to return any palms they took home so they can be burned.

After the Priest blesses the ashes and sprinkles them with holy water, the faithful come forward to receive them. The Priest dips his right thumb in the ashes and, making the Sign of the Cross on each persons forehead, say's; "Remember, Man, that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return." (or a variation on those words).

A Day of Repentance:   The distribution of ashes reminds us of our own mortality and calls us to repentance.   In the early Church, Ash Wednesday was the day on which those who had sinned,and wished to be readmitted to the Church, would begin their public penance. The ashes that we receive, remind us of our own sinfulness, and many Catholic's leave them on there foreheads all day as a sign of humility.

Fasting and Abstinence are required:   The Church emphasizes the penitential nature of Ash Wednesday by calling us to fast and abstain from meat. Catholics who are over the age of 18 and under the age of 60 are required to fast,which means they eat only one complete meal and two smaller ones during the day, with no food in between. Catholics who are over the age of 14, are required to refrain from eating any meat, or any food made with meat, on Ash Wednesday.

Taking Stock of Our Spiritual Life:   The fasting and abstinence is not a simple form of penance, however, It is also a call for us to take stock of our spiritual lives. As Lent begins, we should set out specific spiritual goals we would like to reach before Easter and decide how will we pursue them---for instance, by going daily to mass when we can and receiving the Sacrament of Confession more often.

Ash Wednesday is February 6th 2008, please check your missalettes for mass and confession times.       Thank you and God Bless.
