Update #7

DATE:  June 26, 2005
TO: Bill and Terri Gorman's friends and family
FROM: Beth Gorman-Hackstadt

It's been quite a while since I sent out an update on Mom's condition. I am so happy that I have only good news to share with everyone.

Mom has been at the Heights of Summerlin since April 13th and she has made amazing progress--it is hard to believe that four months ago she was completely paralyzed. Mom's hard work and determination, support from so many friends and family, and excellent physical, occupational, and speech therapy have gotten her to where she is now. And I am certain these things will sustain her and see her through until she completely recovered.

Although she is still recovering from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Mom is medically stable. The trach, catheter, and feeding tube were all removed quite some time ago with no problem. Mom's upper body is doing very well allowing her much less dependence on others. She can feed herself, answer the phone (if it's within reach), write legibly, brush her teeth . . . all the things we take for granted.

As is typical with GBS (if there is ANYTHING typical about it), the lower body and extremities are slowest to come back. Mom uses a wheelchair to get from her room to rehab every day, but just last week she took her first few steps. Yes, she had to support herself on the parallel bars, and yes it was just a few steps, but to the rehab staff and to all of us who have been through this with Mom and Dad, it was HUGE! Emotionally and psychologically, Mom is doing great. She's working hard and doing everything she can to keep her progress moving forward. My sister Jean visited Las Vegas for a week in early June and she was very impressed with Mom's progress.

Obviously, the severity of GBS and the long road to recovery has been and will continue to be a monumental challenge for Mom, but it has been taking it's toll on Dad also. Monday through Friday, he gets to the Heights before 7:00 a.m., has breakfast with Mom, and sees her off to rehab. He is there every afternoon and evening also. No rehab on weekends or holidays, so Dad spends additional time at the Heights during those times keeping Mom motivated and making sure she gets some physical activity.

The very best news is that Mom will be released from the Heights soon. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Mom will be coming home the week of July 17th. Dad told her about the move to a first floor apartment and she was fine with it. We are all thrilled she is finally coming home--none of us more than Mom--but things will be far from "normal" for quite some time. Being realistic, Mom and Dad are facing a whole new set of challenges--Mom with her continued recovery and Dad as her caregiver. Mom's physical weakness and overwhelming fatigue are problems that are expected to linger for a long time yet. Although she will eventually walk unassisted, Mom will be coming home in a wheelchair, then graduate to a walker, then graduate to a cane before walking on her own. At home, Mom will require physical assistance for just about everything. Several times a week and for many months, she will require physical therapy on an outpatient basis.

Steve and I are returning to Las Vegas on July 7th for four days. We'll spend that time helping Dad prepare for Mom's homecoming. Their apartment will need to be "Terri Ready." This involves removing some things and installing others for temporary conversion to a handicap accessible apartment. I plan on returning to Las Vegas again the week of July 17th and staying for awhile to help Mom and Dad with whatever they need while they both adjust to the new routine.

She tires easily, but Mom really enjoys having visitors now. After three in the afternoon, but especially weekends and holidays are good times for brief visits. If you would like to visit or need directions to the Heights, give Dad a call.

So many of you have kindly and generously offered your help to Mom and Dad since Mom was hit with Guillain-Barre Syndrome in February. When Mom comes home with Dad as her primary and sole caregiver, I know help with a variety of things around the house and with Mom will be greatly appreciated. They'll both have their hands full.

I cannot thank you all enough for your love, support, and prayers. It's been a difficult time, but we have every reason to believe Mom will whip GBS completely and be back to where she was before this hit her. Now it's just a matter of hard work, patience, support, and time.

Warmly,
Beth

May 17, 2005, my brother Andrew was taken via ambulance and helicopter from Imperial, Nebraska to Omaha, Nebraska after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that is invading his lymphoid.  He first discovered a lump under his left armpit about five weeks ago.  He finally sought out medical treatment about 2 weeks ago and has since began losing feeling in his left arm.  They have been trying to determine the exact type of cancer since and have only yesterday determined that the small community hospital in Imperial was to far away from Omaha to effectively determine the type of cancer and effectively treat him.  Through all this they have found three more lumps in Andy's upper torso.

All your prayers will be greatly appreciated.

Update #6

Date: April 17, 2005
To: Bill and Terri Gorman's friends and family
From: Beth Gorman-Hackstadt (the middle daughter)

April 1st was Dad's birthday and also Mom and Dad's 54th wedding anniversary. A bit of a different celebration this year, but we decorated Mom's room at HealthSouth Teneya and helped get cards and a
gift for Mom to give to Dad. We had a birthday cake and brought in some food from the Outback. The staff sang "Happy Birthday" to Dad and we had a little happy hour. I'm sure they'll have a belated celebration as soon as Mom is back home and strong enough for an evening out.

I am in Las Vegas with Mom and Dad for a little while again. I returned on April 11th, but for a very positive reason--to assist with Mom's transfer to a rehab facility that is a step down from HealthSouth Tenaya. Earlier than we anticipated, Mom's condition improved to the point where she no longer required the level of intensive care provided at HealthSouth Tenaya. For several weeks, her blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, etc. have all been within normal ranges. Based on her physical progress, she was ready to transfer to a rehab facility for medically stable patients.

On Wednesday, April 13th, Mom was transferred to:

The Heights of Summerlin
10550 Park Run Drive
Las Vegas, NV  89144
(702) 515-6200

Due to the quality of care she has been receiving these past months, a strong support network, and much hard work on her part, Mom is slowly but surely recovering. Barring any unexpected complication or relapse, the Heights will be where Mom will be for the final months before returning home. And at the Heights, she is no longer in a hospital gown, but wears her own clothing and pajamas. Something familiar. It's great.

Since the last update, Mom has made amazing progress. The things she is now doing may seem minor, but considering she was totally paralyzed and unable to breathe on her own in early February, her progress is HUGE! Every little improvement is cause for a major celebration. Mom can now do such things for herself as hold a utensil and bring food to her mouth, lift her arms above her head, and sit and support herself on the side of her bed for short periods of time. She is taken to the rehab room each morning where she receives physical and occupational therapy. She also has a speech therapist--not because she lost the ability to speak, but to strengthen neck, mouth, and throat muscles.

The only "medical" things lingering are the capped off  trach and the feeding tube. Although she has not used either of them in weeks, they are still in place because Mom is unbelievably weak and overwhelmingly exhausted all the time. Should something unexpected come up her condition is probably too weak to fight it and it would be a major setback because it would require surgery to put have either of those devices put back in again. So, since they don't interfere with her rehab, the doctors are erring on the side of caution by leaving them in place for a little while longer.

Emotionally and psychologically, some days are more trying than others. In coping with that aspect of this illness, Richard, the friend who we found through the Guillain-Barre Foundation International, and his wife Sue have been a godsend in helping us understand that occasional confusion, anger, and frustration are virtually unavoidable for Guillain-Barre patients and that these too shall pass. Guidance, advice, and support for Mom and Dad from someone who has literally been where she is now as well as his primary caregiver--well, they truly know what a life-changing experience this is and that it has emotional and psychological as well as physical challenges to overcome. They help us to determine when "tough love" is appropriate and when patience is appropriate. Their friendship and generosity of time and assistance is an amazing gift. All the other friends and family who continue to support Mom and Dad are such a great help also.

Date: April 20, 2005
To: Bill and Terri Gorman's friends and family
From: Beth Gorman-Hackstadt (the middle daughter)

Okay, a major hiccup. Dad had been having some serious pain in his groin for the past few weeks. Long story short--this afternoon he underwent a double hernia operation. Mom is in good hands and well cared for at the Heights, but it was difficult for her knowing Dad had to have surgery while she was in the middle of a major illness herself. Thank you so much to the friends who checked up on Mom today since neither Dad nor I could see her. Dad was worried about Mom and Mom was worried about Dad and there they were--both in different hospitals at the same time. (Some day this may be an amusing story for them to tell.)

Anyway, Dad had the surgery as an outpatient and I brought him home just a couple hours after the surgery. It went well and there were no complications. The decision to have it done immediately turned out to be a wise one under the circumstances because the surgeon said one side was really bad and delay may have resulted in some serious consequences. Mom is going to need Dad healthy and strong when she comes home. Dad is in quite serious pain tonight (the doctor described it as "moderate to severe") and will be for a few days, so he will be recovering here at home for several days before he can even tolerate a trip to visit Mom. Dad cannot drive for ten days to two weeks. His timetable for full recovery is expected to be about six weeks. It's a pretty trying time for both Mom and Dad.

So, under these new circumstances with both Mom and Dad down, Jeanne, Judy, me, and Mom and Dad will have to make some decisions as a family on what we will be doing for the next several weeks.

We'll keep you posted.

Warmly,
Beth

Update #5
Date: April 2, 2005
To: Bill and Terri Gorman's friends and family
From: Beth Gorman-Hackstadt (the middle daughter)

I intended to return home to Arizona with my husband Steve last weekend, but had a slight delay. The date for Dad’s scheduled stress test for his heart was moved up. Should the result have shown a problem, an overnight stay in the hospital would have been necessary for an angiogram and/or further treatment requiring a minimum overnight hospital stay. Dad had the test Tuesday. No problem, he was given a clean bill of health. So, Steve drove here late last night and I will be leaving for home on Sunday. For sure. Really. I’m going home. So, I wanted to get one last email update from here before I go.

Again, only good news about Mom. She is completely breathing on her own and has been for almost two weeks. She receives some oxygen through her nose, but that is just because breathing is exhausting, so deep breaths are difficult at times. The trach is still in place, but it is capped and she can speak which makes communication possible with everyone--not just those with the patience to attempt to read her lips. Her voice sounds remarkably like it always has--don’t know why we were expecting a robotic sound.

The other good news is that Mom can now have food by mouth. Earlier this week she was given a barium test to see if she had the strength to swallow without the danger of anything going into her lungs. Very thin liquids (water, broth) are still a bit of a concern, so those are not allowed, but she can chew and have virtually anything else she wants. Mom doesn’t have much of an appetite, and her weakness makes even eating an exhausting chore, so she is still being supplemented with food through her stomach tube to assure she receives adequate nutrition.

Physicians have such limited experience with this disease that we have found our best and most accurate sources of information are through former Guillian-Barre patients. As we have become more and more educated about the billion predictable and unpredictable aspects of Guillian-Barre Syndrome we only know a few things for sure:
1. Each recovery is unique as far as what part of the body regains function first;
2. There is no timetable for recovery;
3. Hands, arms, feet, etc. can fluctuate between numbness, no feeling, or pain many times as healing occurs over time;
4. Overwhelming exhaustion is guaranteed--10 minutes of rehab can require five hours of sleep;
5. Plateaus can happen such as months with no sign of improvement in a body part, then movement can occur there in just a matter of days;
6. Eventual full recovery without relapse is the most common outcome.
It is just the nature of this fascinating and terrifying condition, as well as a major source of frustration for the patients and their loved ones.

As far as visitors: I guess we were premature in our belief that visitors would be welcome and beneficial as soon as possible. Mom has lots and lots of healing to do and as her physical rehab increases, her fatigue will increase--often to the point where it is virtually an effort to open her eyes even when she is awake. Knowledge is power, though, so we know to not be concerned about her overwhelming exhaustion. If you would like to visit Mom, please contact my father first as he is with her each day and will know where she is as far as strength, ability, and desire to have visitors. She does appreciate the contact, cards, emails, etc. so she knows there are very many people supporting her and my dad.

Mom commented to me one day that no one can possibly understand what she is going through and I told her I would see what could be done about that. There is no Guillian-Barre support group in Nevada, so I posted a message through the Guillian-Barre Foundation discussion forum online. Hit the jackpot, so to speak. I was referred to a 67 year old retired gentleman (Richard) in Las Vegas who had the condition in 1999. I called him, met him for lunch last week, and this guy is a gem! A complete gentleman, compassionate, and a strong desire to support other families going through what my parents are facing. Unbelievably, he lives less than two miles from Mom and Dad. He went with me to meet Mom right after lunch and his respect, encouragement, reassurance, understanding, gentle manner, and the way he truly listened to Mom was remarkable. He knows this is a condition that must be experienced to be understood. Dad spoke with him today and this coming week they are meeting for lunch and Richard agreed to accompany Dad to check out the next step down as far as a rehab facility after Mom recovers to the point where she does not require the level of care provided at HealthSouth. Richard’s experience makes him uniquely qualified to help Dad determine what is needed for the next step of Mom’s Guillian-Barre rehab.

On our way out of town in the morning, Steve and I are meeting with a 39 year old woman who also contacted us through the posting. She offered to visit Mom, be a cheerleader, be supportive--she said she needs to help. And she said perhaps being a woman, Mom might be more comfortable in opening up about certain concerns she would find awkward to discuss with Richard.

How lucky we are to have found these people. And how fortunate Mom and Dad are to have so many family and friends supporting them right now. Your concern and willingness to be there for them has been an invaluable source of comfort.   One last thing--as of next week, Dad will no longer have a computer, so he will not be able to be contacted via email. I will continue to send updates from Arizona when any significant news or changes occur and I have a sub email account set up to do that. The address is WNOMOSNOW@frontiernet.net.

Warmly,
Beth

To: Bill and Terri Gorman's friends and family
From: Beth Gorman-Hackstadt (the middle daughter)

First of all, Ralph, Carol, Erick, Dody, Pete, Ben, David, Cynthia, Don, Veronica--I cannot possibly express how much our family appreciates you coming on Saturday to help us move Mom and Dad’s second floor apartment to their new first floor apartment. Having to move in preparation of Mom’s return home in the future was not something my father needed in addition to what he already has on his plate. Because our time and attention has been focused on Mom, we were not organized and had nothing packed. You were all so understanding and kind and I cannot thank you enough for a hard day of work packing, climbing up and down stairs, unpacking, tearing down and reassembling things, and bringing food to feed the crew. We could not have done it without you and I cannot possibly thank you enough for the way you stepped up to help my dad.

Mom does not need the added stress of worrying about it right now, so Dad has not yet discussed this necessary move to their new first floor level apartment with Mom. He will do so at the time during her recovery and rehab that he and her physicians deem it appropriate. I cannot emphasize enough the need for that news to reach Mom only through Dad, so please keep that in mind should you email or send any cards to her.

Now about Mom: I have nothing but absolutely wonderful and amazing news to report about her progress.

Mom has been at the rehab hospital for about two and a half weeks now and is still in the ICU unit there. Her recovery and rehab period is expected to be slow, but in “Guillian-Barre time” she has made tremendous progress. The first two weeks were a period of adjustment for Mom and she was experiencing lots of minor complications, but her physicians and therapists managed to get them under control.

For about ten days now, Mom has spent several hours each morning in a cardiac chair which slowly adjusts her body from being in a prone position to being upright once again. Although moving back and forth between the bed and the chair is very painful, Mom is tolerating it a little better each day. There has been a great deal of progress in her upper body. She can lift both arms off the bed, she can lift her head off her pillow a little bit, she can reach a little bit, and her grip is getting stronger.

The best news is in the area of Mom’s breathing. It’s rather complicated, but breathing without the assistance of a ventilator is dependant on return to a certain level of physical strength. On Sunday her pulmonary doctor felt her progress was such that she was ready. After all these many weeks, Mom had come to rely on the security of knowing her breathing was done by a ventilator her trach. Although the doctor and therapists felt she was ready and able to breathe on her own again and Mom certainly wanted to get off the ventilator, she was not at a place psychologically where she had the confidence. She was quite scared and distressed. So, rather than stressing Mom out about it, the doctors and therapists went ahead with it without telling her. All day Monday and all day Tuesday, Mom breathed completely on her own without any problem. When her doctor came in Tuesday evening and told Mom she had been breathing on her own for two days she was shocked, but thrilled. Her confidence in her progress and her motivation level shot up like crazy. Guillian-Barre is very unpredictable, so the trach will remain in place for a while yet should there be the need for it again, but that’s rather unlikely. The next step is adding a speech therapist into her rehab routine who will work with Mom and unless some unforeseen complication arises we should be hearing her speak again soon. It is incredible that Mom’s respiratory system is coming back so fast.

Mom’s arthritis continues to contribute to her pain and discomfort, but her it is managed as best as it can be for her. She still has a feeding tube in her stomach and that is expected to remain in place for a while. It is critical that she can swallow and cough strongly before eating or drinking by mouth. Also, Mom has made very little progress in her lower body and legs. She is still paralyzed from the waist down, but that is not unusual or much of a concern right now. Commonly, extreme fatigue goes along with recovery from Guillian-Barre. One former patient wrote that it is not a fatigue that a good night’s rest can relieve, but rather an exhaustion that is almost indescribable. This seems to be the case off and on with Mom.

If nothing else, we have learned that there is no specific time expectation for recovery from Guillian-Barre because recovery rates are determined by so many factors. Still, Mom’s improvements are absolutely huge and encouraging. We are remaining cautiously optimistic.

Visitation is still not advisable other than family at this time, but Mom knows you all have her in your thoughts and prayers. I expect we will not be getting a security deposit back from her room at the rehab hospital. I have her cards strung up all over the place, my sister Judy has several dolphin mobiles hung up, and all kinds of other things are up all over Mom’s room.

My sisters were here last weekend to visit and help with the move, but they have returned to Kansas and Florida. My husband Steve is arriving Thursday and barring any unforeseen or compelling reason for me to stay, I will be returning to Arizona with him on Saturday or Sunday. I am very anxious to get home. Mom is slowly and steadily improving and Dad will be adjusting to having no female around until Mom finally returns home. He did the first load of laundry in his life tonight. How he managed to live 76 years without ever doing a single load of laundry is amazing to me.

Many months of hard work lie ahead for both of them, but I know Mom and Dad have a great support system here in Las Vegas with is a great comfort. Thank you all so much for the continued contact, support, cards, prayers, and love coming their way. It is invaluable. I will send updates from Arizona with any significant news or changes.

Warmly,
Beth

To: Bill and Terri Gorman's friends and family
From: Beth Gorman-Hackstadt (the middle daughter)

I have heard from many of you since my last mailing. My thanks to each and every one of you for the kindness, concern, and continued support for my parents and for your understanding my family’s inability to thank each of you individually at this time. Mom has been very very ill for over a month now, and she still has a long way to go, so your encouragement and prayers are a great comfort to Mom and Dad.   On Monday (03/7/05), Mom was released from the Intensive Care Unit at Spring Valley Hospital and transported to:

HEALTHSOUTH
Hospital at Tenaya
2500 N. Tenaya Way
Las Vegas, NV 89128
(702) 562-2021

As I mentioned in the last email, this is an acute care rehabilitation hospital. Everything necessary to continue treatment for Guillain-Barre is available there with the added benefit of an extensive rehab department and staff. HEALTHSOUTH Hospital at Tenaya is located west of US-95 and a few blocks north of Lake Mead Blvd.

Mom is still too weak to breathe on her own and uninterrupted vital signs monitoring is still required, so the transfer between hospitals was by ambulance under the care and guidance of a team of medical professionals. The transfer was necessary and although the trip was short and every consideration was taken to assure her comfort, physically it was a difficult, stressful, and exhausting ordeal for her. HEALTHSOUTH Hospital at Tenaya has a critical care unit and at this stage of her illness, it was appropriate for Mom to be admitted to the ICU there.

Mom’s first few days consisted of assessment by her physicians and therapists to formulate the physical and respiratory treatment protocol required not only for Guillain-Barre patients in general, but also with consideration for Mom’s specific case. Apparently, Guillain-Barre is an extremely complicated condition and we are learning that her ultimate outcome is highly dependent on day by day adjustments of her rehab plan based on more factors than any of us could have imagined. This is already evidenced by Mom continuing to experience additional complications possibly, but not necessarily, related to Guillain-Barre. Some problems she has encountered that would be minor events for an otherwise healthy person--such as vomiting, digestive upsets, and a slight fever--require close monitoring and aggressive response. For the most part Mom’s vital signs are good, she is stable, and she has adjusted as well as can be expected to the trach. Most of Mom’s body is still paralyzed, but she can move her head and shoulders very well now and although it requires a great deal of effort we are seeing her hands and forearms (especially on her right side) moving a bit better. And, because Mom remains completely mentally alert, she understands the importance of cooperating fully with the physicians and techs working with her. Physically, she is in pain a great deal of the time, sometimes from the Guillain-Barre, sometimes from other complications, sometimes from her pre-existing arthritis, so pain management is another factor in the equation.

Mom and Dad understand that Mom is facing a long and difficult rehabilitation with many, many months--possibly even a year or more--of hard work ahead and perhaps some setbacks along the way. As weak, sick, and as exhausted as she is, so far Mom is giving it her best effort. Her patience, willpower, and motivation to maintain and endure for the long haul will be tested over and over again, but with the excellent medical care she is receiving and with continued love, support, and encouragement from family and friends we have every reason to remain optimistic that she will slowly but surely improve as time goes by. The initial and most critical goal is for her to regain her ability to breathe unassisted and be able to talk once again. The ultimate goal is to return to the quality of life she enjoyed prior to contracting Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Lots of intermediate steps and goals are set somewhere in between.

We have heard from many of you wanting to know when you can see Mom. Although she is looking forward to having visitors, she is not quite at the stage where she can tolerate that stimulation and while she is in the ICU at HEALTHSOUTH Hospital at Tenaya it is still advisable that only family are with her right now. Mom’s emotional, psychological, and physical challenges are huge. Because her friends are very important to her, the sooner she can reestablish those connections herself, the better it will be for her during the rehab and recovery stage. We bring your cards, letters, and email messages to her each day. She knows you are all there with her in spirit and it boosts her spirits. I hope by the next time you hear from me I can tell you that she can have visitors. She misses seeing so many of you and I have no doubt she will benefit greatly from reconnecting with you again.

My sisters Jeanne and Judy are coming back Las Vegas this week along with Jeanne’s son Philip to spend time with Mom and help with the move to their new apartment. My daughter Laurie, who is a cosmetologist, flew in from Phoenix for a day last week and the hospital allowed her to treat Mom to a “Spa Day.” Mom was able to enjoy a shampoo, head massage, manicure, pedicure--the whole treatment, but in a way Mom was able to tolerate in her condition. I was so proud of my daughter. The hospital staff could have attended to those needs, but the pampering, love, and care she received from her granddaughter was a beautiful and generous gift that meant the world to Mom.

I will contact you all again should there be any significant changes and hopefully be able to tell you Mom can have visitors. Until then, thank you all for being with Mom in spirit and for keeping her in your prayers.

Warmly,
Beth

Terri Gorman update

Date: Sunday March 6, 2005
To: Bill & Terri Gorman's friends and family
From: Beth Gorman-Hackstadt (the middle daughter)

I am still in Las Vegas with my father, so we have heard from many of you since the first emailing. Glad to hear this is working out and you are all so understanding about receiving a general message rather than individual acknowledgements right now. Knowing my mom, she'll take care of that when she is fully recovered.

I understand the link I sent that gives a good overview of Guillain-Barre Syndrome did not work. For those of you who are still interested, try clicking on the National Institute of Neurological Disorders home page at http://www.ninds.nih.gov/  (or type it into your address line). From there, select "Disorders" to access an alphabetical listing, select Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and you should be there.

Now about Mom. I have only good news to report. On Friday she finished up the series of five plasma exchange treatments. Before the treatments began Mom's entire body was paralyzed, her breathing was sustained by machine, and she was down to eye movement only. It was terrifying. By the end of the second treatment we saw some involuntary twitching. Although she is still extremely weak, as of today she is able to shrug her shoulders, move her head and arms some, wiggle her toes, and almost close her hand. A few of the additional problems associated with Guillain-Barre Syndrome continue to crop up, but so far most are proving to be manageable and are most likely temporary. Mom still requires assisted breathing. For comfort and mobility purposes, she had a tracheotomy a few days ago to replace the throat ventilator. It was a happy day to see a smile on her face once again. When she recovers the lung and chest muscle strength necessary to breathe unassisted the trach will be removed. It is exhausting, but the weaning process has already begun and this morning Mom managed over two hours breathing on her own. Because her ability to swallow and cough are so suppressed, a feeding tube was inserted in her stomach the same day as she had the tracheotomy. The feeding tube is also expected to be a temporary situation. We have every reason to be optimistic that Mom will eventually make a full recovery.

The next step is admission to an acute care rehabilitation facility. This week, possibly as early as Monday (3/07/05), Mom will be transferred to: HEALTHSOUTH Hospital of Tenaya, 2500 N. Tenaya Way, Las Vegas, NV 89128, (702) 562-2021

Everything necessary to continue treatment for Guillain-Barre is available there with the added benefit of an extensive rehab department and staff. Mom has a lot of hard work ahead of her as she begins an aggressive physical rehab regimen, but she has had the courage to deal with the worst of it now, so we are certain she can handle whatever is required. One of the essential factors is sensitivity to the emotional and psychological impacts as well as the physical ones. Being realistic, I know Mom and Dad are both facing a long, difficult time with some days probably better than others and perhaps a setback or two, so a positive attitude and a high motivation level are very important.

Mom will be able to have visitors at HealthSouth and it is something she has been looking forward to for weeks. Many of you have expressed a desire to see Mom and I know she and Dad will benefit greatly from encouragement and continued support from friends and family. I do not know what her daily schedule will entail right now, nor exactly how time for visits and other social interaction works into her treatment plan. When she is settled in I will let you know and at that time information about visitation can be obtained by contacting HealthSouth directly.

One final matter. We expect Mom will probably be able to return home before she has fully recovered physically and the final rehab required will be provided by visiting therapists. Right now Mom and Dad live in a second floor apartment. In anticipation of her initial limitations when she returns home, they will need to move. Fortunately, a first floor apartment opened up in the same complex where they live now, so effective March 15th.

The move is a matter of necessity rather than choice, but considering they will be in the same place, it shouldn't be a major adjustment. Because of all Mom has been through recently and all that she has ahead of her she does not need the extra stress and concern about the move. Dad will determine the appropriate time during Mom's recovery and prior to her release to discuss the move with her. It is in Mom's best interest to have that news reach her only through Dad. Please keep that in mind should you write or visit her.

Again, I cannot thank you all enough for the prayers, calls, and letters and for your continued support for my parents. The role of my two sisters, Jeanne and Judy, has been especially invaluable because they have been here every step of the way, flying back and forth to Las Vegas when they can and being in constant touch with Mom and Dad.

Throughout it all Mom has remained mentally aware and alert of everything that is going on and has cooperated with whatever has been required of her. She is a very courageous woman.

Warmly,

Beth

Date: February 28, 2005
To: Bill and Terri Gorman's friends and family
From: Beth Gorman-Hackstadt (the middle daughter)

As most of you who are receiving this are aware by now, my mother is very seriously ill. My parents have received many calls of concern, cards with good wishes, offers of help, and prayers. Please know that each and every one of these is greatly appreciated and does much to boost their spirits.

A great deal of our family's time right now is focused on Mom's immediate medical needs which will be followed by a lengthy rehabilitation period of perhaps up to a year, so although we would love to be able to do so, time just does not allow us to thank each of you personally at this time. For now, I feel the best way to express our appreciation and to keep you informed of Mom's progress is through email.

So, here is a brief status report.

About two weeks ago Mom was struck with a condition known as Guillain-Barre Syndrome. It is a rare and fascinating condition, but rather than going into a lengthy explanation of it, a concise, easily understandable overview can be found at http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/gbs/gbs.htm
Beyond that, of course, there is a wealth of information available online.

Mom's case was one with a particularly rapid onset followed by rapid progression. On February 14th she experienced her first symptoms and in a matter of days she was hospitalized. On February 16th she was admitted to the intensive care unit at Spring Valley Hospital in Las Vegas where she remains as of today. At this point Mom is totally paralyzed and able to breathe only with the assistance of a ventilator. In addition she is suffering with many of the other problems commonly associated with Guillain-Barre including fluctuations in blood pressure, pneumonia, kidney concerns, etc. At this stage, Mom is very very ill. That is the bad news.

There is much good news and many reasons for us all to be optimistic. Guillain-Barre does not affect the mind, so Mom is completely alert. She understands her condition. She sees and hears everything going on around her at all times. As frightening as this has to be for Mom and devastating as it is for all of us who love and care about her, the prognosis is excellent. Although it takes some time, the overwhelming majority of Guillain-Barre patients make a full recovery, rarely relapse, and have no permanent damage. We have every reason to believe this will be Mom's experience. She was diagnosed early and she is being cared for by excellent physicians who are following an aggressive line of treatment. For the next five days, Mom is undergoing plasma exchange procedures. When those are completed, we expect Mom to begin the road to recovery: out of ICU to intermediate hospital care to inpatient rehab and then back home.

Right now Mom's condition and ICU restrictions are such that (with few exceptions) visits are limited to immediate family and flowers are not allowed, but each day we take cards to the hospital to read to her and we pass along your good wishes. And though we have no specific timeline, when she is transferred out of the ICU restrictions will be relaxed. We look forward to the time when we can tell you visits are allowed. I have no doubt Mom will benefit physically, emotionally, and spiritually from seeing you again.

Mom and Dad are both facing some difficult challenges as Mom recovers. Your kindness, support, and offers of help to my father are greatly appreciated and welcomed. Your continued prayers and good thoughts for Mom are invaluable. My sisters have been here and I will be staying with Dad in Las Vegas for some time yet, so I will email again with any significant changes or news.

Thank you all so very much. My parents are truly blessed to have such wonderful, loving, and caring friends and family.

Warmly, Beth
