Obituary & Services for Dr. Paul Wainscott

DR. PAUL WAINSCOTT, 83, passed away after a battle with cancer June 20, 2008, in Henderson.  Paul was born Aug. 28, 1924, in La Porte, Ind.  He served in the US Army in the Philippines in 1943 and was wounded in action multiple times and received a Purple Heart and 2 Bronze Stars.  Paul married Gloria Terrien Sept. 19, 1946, in Menasha, Wis.  He graduated from Lawrence College in Appleton, Wis., received a master's degree from Indiana University in Bloomington in anatomy, and a medical degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis.  In 1955 Paul set up a family practice in Menasha, Wis., and became a huge Green Bay Packer fan.  He served as president of the Winnebago County Medical Society and as president of the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians.  In 1973, Paul and family left Wisconsin so he could begin a new career teaching family practice in a residency program for the University of Arizona in Tucson.  He then directed and received accreditation for the family practice program at Texas Tech University in El Paso.  Paul returned to private family practice in 1979 in Henderson.  In 1988, Paul retired from family practice.  He was hired by St. Rose de Lima Hospital as director of Medical Staff Affairs.  Paul then worked for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for five years traveling all over the country.  In 1997, Paul retired again and served on the Board of Directors at the Henderson Senior Center.  Paul had a smile on his face and a 'hello' for everyone he met or even passed by on the street.  His life was about helping others.  That showed in his making house calls as a physician, getting library books to shut-ins, and even staying with his unit in the war until he was wounded for the 3rd time.  The awesome memories of Daddy-O and Pops, will continue forever in our hearts.  He is survived by his wife, Gloria; six children, Kathryn (Frank) Dieveney in Denver, John (Linda) in Salt Lake City, Michael in Dallas, Thomas (Laura) in Olive Branch, Miss., Peter in Austin, Texas, and Patrick in Henderson; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Brother Knight: Urgent Prayer Request and Thank You

Prayer Requested:

As a Brother Knight (I belong to Fr. Flanagan Boys Town Council #652 here in Omaha), I am asking you to offer my wife up in your prayers this morning.  I know that having thousands of brother Knights storming the gates of heaven will avail much.  After all, in James Epistle, he writes that the prayers of a righteous man avail much - how much more powerful will it be to have thousands offering up a very brief, but sincere, prayer.  All I ask is that the Lord's will be done with respect to everything in my life including the if, when and how He heals my wife.  I realize and accept that her healing has begun with the first prayer we offered but that her final healing may not take place until she is in heaven.

Christine is only 45, we just celebrated19 yrs  of marriage (which should be a purgatorial pass card for sure) and she is the mother of our 5 children ages 18-7.  Since Christmas 2007 she was bed ridden for 3.5 months and went from 105 lbs to 81 lbs with no explanation.  At this point every major joint on her body is swollen and only because of a steroid drug, prednisone, is she able to shuffle around the house and on good days drive our children to there different activities.  She is still at only 85lbs after increasing to a high fat/protein diet for the last 8 - 10 wks.  The Doc's are baffled and so we pray, cry, get angry, offer it up and now, I am asking for your help in the form of simply saying this one short prayer:

Dear Lord, please heal Christine Worthing in whatever way will eventually bring her closer to you and an eternity of praising you in heaven with all the Angels and Saints.  Give her the wisdom to make wise decisions as she works with those trying to help and give her the grace she needs, daily, to offer her sufferings up for those who are suffering and do not yet know You.  Amen.

And if you think of it, please offer a prayer for our kids that they will see God's hand in this time of difficulty and if you have any prayers left over - I could use a few to help fend off despair and distraction (that always seem to be right around the corner) from being the husband/father I need to be and in order to stay focused on the work I have been given to do here at Project Moses.  Thanks and may God bless you for your genrosity.

And that brings me to the THANK YOU portion of this email:

As executive director of Project Moses, I cannot tell you how proud I am to be called a Knight of Columbus!  Why?  Because, although Project Moses works with all Judeo-Christian faiths in fulfilling it's mission, 90% of the nearly 400 monuments we have displayed in 46 states, since April 2004, are on Catholic sites, and 85% of these monuments are because of a Knights of Columbus Council being involved.

I cannot say it sincerely or often enough -
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

Former President of the USCCB, Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory and 4th Degree Honor Guard after the blessing of a Project Moses Black-Granite Ten Commandments/ Beatitudes monument.

Eagle Scout Steven Bigga of New Jersey with parents, Pastor and fellow scouts after the blessing of the Project Moses Mt. Sinai Tan Marble Ten Commandments/Beatitudes monument he placed as his Eagle Scout Project in 2007.

Once again, thank you for the prayers for my wife and thank you for supporting Project Moses and our mission of restoring respect for God's laws!

Vivat Jesus!

(copy & paste to email.) Please forward this email to all you know - Catholic, Protestant or Jew - Christine and I will gratefully accept the prayers of all who are willing to pray for her.

God bless,

Thank you for your prayers for Vincent Hattrup & Herb Shurtliff

Br. Knights,     I want to thank everyone for their prayers during my father-in-law Vincent Hattrup's recent illness and since his passing on 8 April.  I just got back from his funeral in Idaho on Tuesday evening.  It was a very nice service and it was also very well attended by family, friends, neighbors, and local residents.  Besides my mother-in-law, all nine of their children (and their spouses), all but two of their 27 grandchildren, and one of their two great-grandchildren were present for the services, as were Vince's brother and both of his sisters, and several brother- and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, etc.

As well, I want to thank you all for praying for my father Herb Shurtliff, during his recent chest pain scare.  He ended up having a minor operation to clean out some blood clots that had accumulated in the junction of a heart bypass that he had in 1981, then they put in a stint to hold the vein open and prevent it from doing it again.  He was released from the hospital last Thursday morning and was allowed to return to work this Tuesday (he is a barber).

Thanks again for your prayers!

Jim Shurtliff (and Monica and family)

Update for PSD Frank Holzauer

Worthy Brothers,   I've just gotten off the phone with PSD and SK Frank Holzauer, and he is doing very well.  He told me that what caused the bleeding is something that can happen to men after the age of 50, and his Doctor told him that in most cases the source of the bleeding will heal itself, which is apparently why they couldn't find the source with him.

Bro. Frank is back to normal activity, to whatever he can tolerate.  He appreciates the prayers and concern, and he'll be golfing as soon as he can get to his clubs.

I think Bro. Frank is as our living proof of the power of prayer, as he's had a bit of a rough year medically, but keeps coming back strong as ever.

Vivat Jesus,   Tony Stephenson PGK, District 4 Deputy

Prayers for PSD and SK Frank Holzhauer/& Update

Brother Knights,   Please include PSD Frank Holzhauer  in your prayers

PSD and Brother Frank Holzhauer is in the hospital again, this time with internal bleeding.  He has been there since early Wednesday morning, and the Doctors have yet to find the source of the bleeding.

This is the only information I have at this time, and as I receive more updates I will pass them along. In the meantime, we are requesting your prayers for Brother Frank and his wife Carol, as well as the rest of his family.
  -----------------------------------
Update on Bro. Frank Holzhauer

I've been informed that Bro. Frank is in Room 246 at Carson Tahoe Medical Center.  The Doctors were able to stop the bleeding, tests that were run didn't uncover the cause, and he might be home Sunday.   If anything changes I'll pass it on when I get it.

Tony Stephenson PGK, District 4 Deputy

On top of my father-in-law passing away this morning, I just received a call from my sister to let me know that my dad, Herb Shurtliff, was admitted to the hospital in Idaho Falls, ID tonight, due to chest pains.  The blood test that checks for a heart attack is back and were negative, so they will be conducting a stress-thallium test tomorrow morning.  Please keep him in your prayers.

Br. Knights,   Please pray for my father-in-law, Br. Vincent Hattrup, who is a PGK and Honorary Life member of Council 1389 in Cottonwood, ID.  Vince was admitted to the hospital on Friday evening with pneumonia in both lungs, and the situation was quite serious.  Although he is somewhat improved as of Saturday, he is still not out of the woods.  His white blood cell count is low and he is also having congestive heart problems and problems with his liver.  Vince will be 85 on Friday, so his age is also a factor.

Please pray for him and also for my mother-in-law and the rest of our family.

Passing of Reverend James Swenson

Brother Knights and Ladies, It is with sadness that I forward the news of the passing of Reverend James Swenson, who passed on to his eternal reward earlier this evening (4/02/2008.)   Ruben Hermogino, Grand Knight of San Lorenzo Ruiz Council 13392 in Las Vegas called me tonight with this sad news and requests prayers for Fr. Swenson for the repose of his soul. There are no other details to report at this time. We will keep everyone inform by email when funeral services are arranged.

Fr. Swenson will be missed especially by the parish community of St. Bridget's in Las Vegas. When Fr. Swenson arrived at St. Bridget's in 1985, he was actually sent by the then-bishop to shut it down within six months because it had so few parishioners and was so financially strapped. The second oldest parish in Las Vegas, established in 1945, appeared set to become a footnote in the history of Las Vegas two decades ago. When Fr. Swenson surveyed the inner city area and talked with devoted church members, however, he became convinced that the neighborhood, already in decline, needed the church. Instead of shuttering the church, Fr. Swenson remodeled a former apartment nearby and opened a chapel for perpetual adoration.

Fr. Swenson will be remembered for his devotion to GOD and his community and the need for a place for prayer. As well, Fr. Swenson will be remembered for his commitment to building a new Church Building, the Dedication mass was celebrated by Bishop Pepe on February 3rd 2008.

The more parishioners learned about Fr. Swenson's life, the more they understood why he wouldn't let St. Bridget's die.

Born in Kansas City, he was raised by nuns in a Catholic orphanage. After serving in the Army during the occupation of Japan, he finished high school and college in San Francisco. He worked as an accountant for the city of San Francisco before entering a seminary at the age of 40. He wasn't ordained until he was 45. He served at parishes in Reno, rural Nevada, and locally at St. Anne's and Our Lady of Las Vegas prior to taking over at St. Bridget's.

Please Keep Reverend James Swenson in your prayers.

Thank you,

Paul Dendary, State Deputy

Prayers requested for Bill Grant

Dear Brothers:   Our Brother Bill Grant of Council 10442 in Las Vegas, has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He will have the tumor removed, but the prognosis is not good.   As with many other cancers. Prayers to St. Peregrine are much appriciated. Bill has been a Knight since 1994 and has devoted much time to our pancake breakfasts and other affairs. Please keep him in your prayers. As Follows:

Prayer to Saint Peregrine
O great St. Peregrine, you have been called "The Mighty," "The Wonder-Worker," because of the numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have had recourse to you.   For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fibre of our being, and who had recourse to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more. You were favoured with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of the sick whom we entrust to you. (Pause here and silently recall the names of the sick for whom you are praying)
Especially William J. Grant Jr.
Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing to God, now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy.     Amen.

John Privitera, F.S. Council 10442 Las Vegas, NV.

Passing of Br. Carl F. Hipsley

Br. Knights,   Fallon Council 4828 was recently informed that one of our Br. Knights, Carl F. Hipsley, passed away this summer, on 18 July.  Although Br. Hipsley was an Honorary Life member of the Fallon Council, he had been living in the Gardnerville area for the past several years, so we were unaware of his death until we recently received a note from his daughter, informing us of his passing.

Please pray for the repose of Br. Carl's soul and also for his family.
